Interview with Dr. Michael Thorpe: Questions about Knees

Oct 31, 2017

Dr. Thorpe and I have known each other for 32 years starting with my 3rd surgery - the femoral osteotomy when I was 34 years old. Since then were 5 more surgeries on my left knee and 2 on my right. Sooo you could say he knows my knees.

He was very gracious to say yes to this interview where we talk about knees, knee pain, surgery, and more.

After a long, hard series of decision, I went forward with the decision to replace my left knee.  In one way I felt like I was "selling out" because I've been all about preserving your knee.  But here's the thing - when you've done it all:

Weight management and eating well
Consistent and appropriate movement activity (my favorite is cycling)
Strength training (there is so much you can do to relive pain)
Staying hydrated!

and maybe you've tried external pain relief methods - cortisone, Hyaluronic Acid, PRP, even stem sell...

and your activity level is narrowing (you are able to do fewer things), quality of life is changing, you are becoming less active and the scope of what you CAN do is narrowing and narrowing.

If your doctor is suggesting it is "time" - then perhaps knee replacement is for you too.  Exhaust all the other things you can do first, because a knee replacement is not a magic pill.  If you are weak and overweight, your recovery will be harder and results not as impressive as they could be.

Even though I've made this decision to go ahead with my own knee replacement,  I'm still about delaying it as long as possible.  There is so much you can do without surgery.

I am considering the next book to write is "Healthy Knees Strength Training" - would you be interested in something like that?  There are definite "do's" and "dont's" for getting stronger with achy knees.  What else would you like to know about strengthening your knees?

Enjoy the video!  I will post an update to my knee surgery soon.

Robin
