Getting Started "Week 0"

In the week before the exercise program starts, we want to help you get prepared and you’ll start off with completing the intake survey so that you have a baseline and a record of exactly how you feel now.  We’ve had clients tell us at the end of the program that they’ve forgotten how hard things were because pain has a way of fading in memory.  So we’ll help you make this marker so you can measure how far you’ve come by the end of the program.

We’ll start setting you up for success by talking about mindset with expectations for change and the importance of a positive attitude.

The tutorial on working with weights will give you a clear idea of how much is enough for you, even if you’ve never used weights before.

And finally, you’ll get started with Movement Foundations to begin to break apart bad habits and correct for imbalances.  

 

4 Stages of Progress that are each 4 Weeks long (16 weeks altogether):

Why is each stage 4 weeks long?  

Because it takes time for your body to make the physical adaptations to the exercises you are doing.  You can’t undo a lifetime of bad habits or even years of knee pain in just a week or two. 

There is no magic pill and anyone who says there is full of ...beans.  Too much too fast can cause injury.  Too little will not stimulate change.  Change takes time, is gradual, and we walk you through the process over the 16 weeks of Healthy Knees Formula.  Will it be worth it?  Oh yes, my friend, but you have to do the work.  By the end of the program you will be doing things you never thought you could. 

Each Week Includes:

Video tutorials and support materials that lead you to weekly success.  Each week builds upon the week before in this progressive program.

  • SUCCESS PATH: What to expect this week.  We want you to be ready for the week to come.
  • STRENGTH: Each week is a progressive step to becoming stronger.  You’ll have a follow-along video and a pdf printout of the week’s work.  You will repeat the strength training exercises 2 or 3 times in the week.  If you aren’t quite sure about a certain move, want a regression or challenge, you can look up exercises in our “Exercise Vault” with a video showing you exactly how to do each move.
    • Movement Foundations:  these are the essential elements that are the foundations for healthy movement.  We will work to break apart compensating actions, stop bad habits, and stimulate control. We have 7 moves for you to start work on right away. 
    • Muscle Development: Making your muscles stronger is the key to freedom of movement.  Remember, your bones are your framework and your muscles are the pulleys that move the bones to create movement.  If you muscles are weak, your movement will be more difficult and can be harder on your joints.  Strong muscles equal easier and more balanced movement.  There are 4 predominant areas to strengthen in order to have healthy knees: Calf/Ankle, Knee-Dominant, Hip-Dominant, and Core. 
    • Balance Training: No one wants to fall, right? Working on your body’s ability to balance will help prevent fall-related injuries, correct for some compensations, improve your kinesthetic awareness of your body in three-dimensional space and likely improve your posture. 
    • Stretch and Release Techniques: Regular stretching helps prepare your muscles for the work to come and to recover from the work you just completed.  Stretching will help you improve the range of motion of your knees (and other joints) and help improve your flexibility.  We have divided stretching into three distinct groups:  Dynamic Stretches, Static Stretches, and Release Techniques.
  • MINDSET: mental preparation for a positive outcome.  What you think is where you go and we want to help you frame your work to think like an athlete.  You’ll be coached on mental toughness, getting better every day, having patience with the process, never giving up, and so much more.  We believe in you and that you can do this and achieve big results.
  • FUEL: We help to take the mystery out of good health habits with food, fueling your body for exercise, and yes, even sleep habits.  How you fuel your body matters. 

And in Stage 2 we add Indoor Cycling:

  • RIDE: 2 different bicycle workouts each week.  Cycling is a key ingredient for good knee health.  You don’t even need to know how to ride a bike.  We have tutorials on bike options and equipment, exactly how to set up your bike to protect your knees, how to adjust your bike for the most comfortable ride.  

We start in the beginning with cycling technique to remove all the mystery (and sometimes fear) of stationary bike riding.  It’s fun, you are always in control and encouraged to do you best, and besides strengthening your knees and legs, cycling will strengthen your heart too.  

Motion is Lotion!  Your knees are made to move and the motion of cycling actually helps produce more synovial joint fluid which helps to reduce friction and nourish your cartilage.  And this helps to reduce knee pain.

STAGE 1

Knee Resolve - Halt the Pain Spiral

STAGE 2

Knee Relief - Soothing Your Knees

In Stage 2, in addition to advancing in strength, we introduce indoor cycling as a tool for healthy knee movement and knee pain reduction.  You’ll learn how to pedal a bike with confidence and control with 30 minute biking sessions that focus on technique.  

Don’t worry, we don’t do any of those crazy things that you may have seen in other spinning programs.  Our cycling is sensible and based on real cycling technique - in fact, everything you learn in our classes you can take outside for your bicycling adventures should you so choose.  

How hard will you work? On a scale of Zone 1 (easy)  to Zone 5 (all out max), in Stage 2 we are primarily working in Zones 1 (easy) & 2 (moderate) so you get the feel for it.  You will surprise yourself with how quickly your body will adapt.  Many of our clients say they notice a reduction in knee pain during this first 4 weeks.

By the End of Stage 2:

I know, because I’ve been there.  I was born with a rare congenital condition that caused knee pain all my life.  I’ve had 12 knee surgeries (starting at age 13) and now, at age 60 have both knees replaced.  I was a competitive collegiate runner who’s running career ended because of severe osteoarthritis at age 24.  

Yet, through these many surgeries, I was able to stay fit, active, and healthy and postponed the ultimate replacements by 30 years because of the training I had done.  Even my orthopedic surgeon said that if it weren’t for cycling and strength training I would have had to have my knees replaced a decade ago.  That got me to thinking that I could help so many others with their pain by following the same kind of training that was so successful for me.
